Travelling Abroad – Advice & Vaccinations
Please ensure you complete one form for each person travelling and hand them to the practice NO LESS THAN 8 WEEKS BEFORE YOU TRAVEL
If you are travelling to a tropical country or during a period of high demand, please submit the form a MINIMUM OF 8-10 WEEKS before you travel. We may not be able to accommodate requests submitted at short notice or during periods of high demand. In that case we will provide you with a list of your current vaccinations and you may need to arrange vaccinations via a private clinic.
NURSE TRAVEL REVIEW
During this consultation the nurse will review your travel form with you, any previous immunisations on your medical record, and decide which vaccinations you require and will administer those we hold in stock as listed below.
You may wish to look up which vaccinations you might need as well as useful information and advice on the following websites:
- NaTHNaC – Country List (travelhealthpro.org.uk)
- Travel vaccinations – Available vaccines – NHS (www.nhs.uk)
The following travel vaccinations are usually available free on the NHS:
- diphtheria, polio and tetanus (combined booster)
- typhoid.
- hepatitis A
- Cholera
The majority of countries our patients travel to require only Hepatitis A and/or Typhoid vaccinations, which can be given ahead of time as we usually have these in stock.
However, if you are travelling to a tropical country where a more complex schedule of vaccinations is required, such as Rabies or Japanese Encaphalitis – You will need to arrange these via a private travel clinic as we no longer administering these vaccinations. The nurse will be able to advise you as part of the travel review.
Please note: We are no longer a Yellow Fever Centre, therefore you will need to attend a private travel clinic if you require Yellow Fever vacation.
Booking an Appointment
Due to the time required to review your vaccination history and travel plans. We can only provide a limited number of travel clinic slots per week without it impacting other services. Therefore, we recommend you submit your travel assessment form as soon as possible, but no later than 8 weeks before you depart.
Please Note: Even if submitted on time, during periods of high demand we may not be able to offer you an appointment before your departure date. If this is the case we will notify you as soon as possible to make arrangements via a private travel clinic.
You will be offered the next available appointment with the nurse and we ask that you do all you can to attend this appointment. The practice may not be able to offer you an alternative appointment before your departure date. We kindly ask that you be as flexible with your schedule as possible to accommodate the appointment we offer you.
We are unlikely to be able to offer an new appointment to patients failing to attend their travel appointment or giving insufficient notice when cancelling.
If we are unable to offer you an appointment, you will be provided with a copy of your vaccination history and advised to book with a private travel clinic instead.
